Horror Realm’s Summer of Scares Invades the Hollywood Theater in August

Pittsburgh, PA – August 2, 2013 – Horror Realm’s Summer of Scares continues with three events at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont in August:

 

• 13 Hours of Sci Fi – Building on the success of its previous 13 Hours of Horror and 13 Hours of Grindhouse programs, Horror Realm tackles cheesy science fiction movies on August 10.  Doors open at 10:45 AM and tickets are $13 for an all day pass or $5 per individual movie.  All proceeds benefit the Hollywood Theater.  The tentative schedule for the day is:

• Best of KSWA Event – Horror Realm teams up with the Keystone State Wrestling Alliance for this special presentation to gear up fans for the appearance of legendary wrestling manager JJ Dillon at Horror Realm's fall show (Sept 20-22).

 

The evening will feature KSWA wrestling highlights, Q&A with KSWA megastars including Shawn Blanchard, Dr. Devastation, Lou Martin and Jonny Axx, screening of George "The Animal" Steele’s Q&A panel from March's Horror Realm and a screening of the 1974 film The Wrestler.  There will also be giveaways and prizes.

 

Tickets are $5 for all seats and will be available at the door. Doors open at 6 PM with the program beginning at 7 PM and film screening at 9 PM.

 

• Horror Fan Flea Market – After a wildly successful first year, the popular flea market returns on August 24 from 10 AM to 2 PM and allows fans to clear out their old horror VHS movies, DVDs, figures, posters, t-shirts and other merchandise to find a loving home with other horror fans.  Nonprofessional vendors interested in purchasing a space may contact Horror Realm at info@horrorrealmcon.com.  There will also be a bake sale and the concession stand will be open.  Admission is free.

 

Following the flea market, there will be special screenings of Rewind This! at 3 PM and Bloodsuckers from Outer Space (on 35 mm film) at 5 PM.  Tickets are $5 for the 3 PM show and $7 for the 5 PM show, or $10 for both movies.  All proceeds of the flea market and films will benefit the theater.

 

The Hollywood Theater is located at 1449 Potomac Avenue in Dormont.  Ample free parking is available at metered on-street spaces or parking lots.  The theater is located less than two blocks from the Potomac Avenue light rail transit station.

 Pittsburgh, PA – February 12, 2012 – Horror Realm, Pittsburgh’s modern horror convention, celebrates the third annual Women in Horror Month with two events in February.  Women in Horror Month (WiHM) is a service offered through Viscera, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. WiHM expands opportunities for filmmakers, artists, and fans by raising awareness about the changing roles for women through filmmaking, writing, events, and networking.

A portion of the proceeds of Horror Realm’s WIHM events will benefit Pittsburgh Action Against Rape.

Skull and Bones Entertainment interviews Horror Artist Jerrod Brown

Skull and Bones Entertainment recently had the pleasure of interviewing Horror Artist Jerrod Brown. If you aren't familiar with Jerrod's work, we highly suggesting checking out the links at the end of the interview to see his creative genius for yourself!

S&B: When did you start painting?
Jerrod: As far back as I can remember, I was drawing and painting in some form or fashion. I worked as an artist for two local Scenic Companies for about 10 years.


S&B: Which do you prefer to paint, Acrylics, Oils or Watercolors the most and why?
Jerrod: I've worked in many different mediums and have painted on lots of various elements. My paint of choice is Acrylic on Canvas.  I'm a big advocate of traditional style painting.


S&B: What is your favorite canvas size to paint on and why?
Jerrod: Every artist develops their own comfort level.  My favorite size canvas is 24" x 30" or larger.  I flew up to PA. to meet and talk with fantasy artists Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell a few years ago.  I was always under the impression their paintings were relatively large. They showed me the latest pieces they were working on and I was surprised at how small their boards actually were.


S&B: Some people say that painting helps them relax, is this true for you?
Jerrod: Yes, it's very therapeutic for me.  I paint every chance I get.  I really hate mainstream TV, so I'd much rather be diving into a canvas and staying persistent. Plus, I have something to show for my time.


S&B: We noticed your tag line "REAL Paint on REAL Canvas with REAL Brushes", can you explain?
Jerrod: More and more artists are relying on digital means these days with software colors and a mouse or Wacom pen taking place of palette and brush.  The machine takes over and does most of the work and self reliance is becoming less and less. If you go into a bookstore and look at all the covers, 90% or more are done in digital style and you couldn't tell me the artist who painted it because they all look alike.  Some even go as far as digitally manipulating existing photos and calling them their paintings.  If I see something hand painted, there's a good chance I can tell you who painted it by recognizing their style. This makes the individual and their masterpiece unique and sets them apart from others. Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, Ken Kelly, Michael Whelan, Hildebrandt Brothers, etc. (the list goes on) never use digital.  Frank Frazetta once said, "If you're an artist pick up a palette, brush and paint, don't allow technology to hold your hand".  I live by those words.  Don't get me wrong, I own a Wacom board myself, and it has it's purpose.  But, I'd rather have a uniquely crafted piece of art in my hands that my customers can actually see the brushstrokes, feel the layers of textures, even smell the paints. It has so many levels of labor and aspects going on other than just the portrait, as opposed to nothing more than a digitally printed image. At conventions, I offer both my original acrylic paintings on canvas, as well as the prints of the paintings (the best of both worlds). I guess I'm old school 'Paint over Pixels' and a lot of my clients respect that.


S&B: You seem to have a keen eye for detail in the paintings you've done.  Do you draw your work  before you paint, or do the images just come to you?
Jerrod: I first paint in my base background colors. Then I'll sketch in my background elements and paint them in. From there, I sketch in my main forground elements and paint them in last. All between drying times of course. Sometimes it depends on the piece and how I need to approach it.  I'm not an airbrush artist per se, but I use airbrush to highlight or accent the final paintings.


S&B: Why paint Horror type paintings?
Jerrod: I've been a fan of all things Horror since I was a kid.  I grew up admiring the paintings of Basil Gogos (Artist of 'Famous Monsters of Filmland' magazine covers in the 60's and 70's). I had the wonderful honor of meeting and talking with him at length in 2007.  After that discussion, he inspired me to make a go of what I really love.  A year later in 2008 I was laid off from the Scenic Industry, so really, I've only been painting the Horror genre for a little over three years.


S&B: What other things besides Horror have you painted?
Jerrod: Believe it or not, that's too much to explain.  I've painted Building Murals, Theme Park elements, Museums, Resorts, Movie Props, Restaurants, etc. You'll not even see all the things that I've painted as opposed to what I'm painting now. I've dabbled a little in sculpting too. Formerly traveling all over the US and Japan to paint for local companies as a (ghost-artist), but those days are over. Now I'm painting my passion and putting my name on it.


S&B: You currently do the Horror Cover Art for several publishing companies.  Is that different for you than painting other things?
Jerrod: They send me the title of their upcoming book, or a little bit about the story line. From there I do several sketches and try to come up with an idea that reflects what the book is about.  It's a lot of fun and sometimes a challenge coming up with just the right scene.  Sometimes I'm inspired by other artists that I love or horror scenes that I remember from my past ideas.  Frazetta also said "Your book cover art has to stand out from everything else on the shelf. Always keep in mind that if your art draws the viewers eye from across the room, they'll always reach for your art work and not the one sitting next to it." I try to live up to those words... hopefully it's working (ha, ha).


S&B: Where can readers see some of your artwork?  Can they buy your artwork and if so where?

In closing, you've sold over 2000 prints and lots of original paintings, as well as winning awards and publishing book covers in just three years. You have the most elaborate Convention Booth set-up we've ever seen for an artist. To put it mildly your work is "Incredible" and not to be ignored. We can only imagine what's next from the Horror Artist Jerrod Brown......

Mark Patton, was raised in Riverside, Missouri, a Suburb of Kansas City. His first interest, starting at age 8, was in gymnastics. By his high school years, he had excelled in the Junior Olympics. But, acting has also begun to interest him. Mr. Patton, began studying in his high school's drama department, and soon found himself appearing in "Night Must Fall", and John Guare's "House of Blue Leaves" for the Missouri Repertory Company. On top of all this, he also had an interest in country and western music, which his folks had always tried to encourage him to pursue. At 17, he flipped a coin in his bedroom to determine which would it be: New York or Nashville. I came up on tails, and it was off to the Big Apple, where he had landed weeks later with $132 in his pocket. He stayed at a Broadway hotel, and he was able to find work almost immediately, first as a waiter and then, upon searching for an agent, work in advertisements. Only a few months passed before he landed a role in "Come Back to the Five 'n Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean." The next year, he was starred in another role "Anna...To the Ifinite Power". Two year's later, Mark landed in a terrifying film about a ghastly killer, possessed inside of a teen in "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge". After "Nightmare 2" wrapped, Mark starred in a TV pilot titled, "Kelsey's Son" with Chuck Connors. Mr. Patton now resides in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Independent Grindhouse 3 Slashes Its Way to the Hollywood Theater on November 19

Horror film showcase includes short and feature projects from independent filmmakers


Pittsburgh, PA – November 13, 2011 – Bastards of Horror and Horror Realm present their third independent grindhouse program as a midnight screening at the Hollywood Theater in Dormont on November 19, 2011.

The Independent Grindhouse program recognizes and celebrates the work of independent filmmakers in the horror genre.  This year’s event features trailers for upcoming films currently in production, plus short and feature films:

My Undeadly, a zombie short film from Dave Reda and Elftwin Films which was named as an official selection of the 2011 Sacramento Horror Film Festival, Shriekfest and the Hollyshorts Film Festival. 

The Slasher Hunter is a parody of slasher films.  Written and directed by Steve Rudzinski and his Dark Mullet Cinema studio, this short film has the tag line “Five slashers. One Slasher Hunter. They're gonna need more slashers.”

The evening’s feature film is Tonight You Die, the second film from Jim Roberts and Blind Sight Productions.  Roberts is an Electronic Media Production major at Kent State University.  His first film, Welcome to Deer Creek, won first place in the 2009 Horror Realm Film Festival and was recently featured on Barnabus Bailey’s Greatest Show Unearthed, an internet horror host program.  Roberts will be on hand for a question and answer session at the end of the program.

Tickets are only $5 and can be purchased at the door.  Tim Gross and Charlie Fleming of the Bastards of Horror will host the event, which includes prize giveaways.  Gross, author of The Big Ass Book of Gross Movie Reviews, will also be signing copies of the book which will be on sale at the theater.

Known for his spontaneity, and his rockstar-like persona, "Hot Rod" is often remembered for his long standing feud with arch nemesis Hulk Hogan, a rivalry that culminated in an epic brawl at Wrestlemania I which saw Hogan and Mr. T going against (and narrowly defeating) Piper and Paul Orndorff (with Muhammad Ali acting as special guest referee).
Throughout his tenure in pro wrestling, Piper accumulated thirty-four championships in various promotions during his career. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.

Steve Dash to Make First Pittsburgh Convention Appearance at Horror Realm

Pittsburgh, PA – September 5, 2011 – Horror Realm, Pittsburgh’s modern horror convention, is pleased to announce that actor and veteran stuntman Steve Dash will be appearing at its fall show on September 16-18.  Horror fans know Dash as Jason from Friday the 13th Part 2.  He has continued to work in the movie industry including roles in Mr. Hush, Stagemore and Hemo.  This will be Dash’s first Pittsburgh convention appearance.

Local television and radio legend Bill Cardille will be appearing at the convention on Saturday, September 17 from noon until 4 PM.  “Chilly Billy” is the beloved host of the iconic local television program Chiller Theater, which Cardille hosted from 1964 to 1983.  This is a rare joint appearance by Cardille and his daughter Lori, who starred in the George Romero film, Day of the Dead. Lori Cardille will be appearing all weekend.

Horror Realm has also added director Danny Steinmann (Savage Streets) and scream queen Linnea Quigley to the guest line up.

Well we have finally set up a blog, so we can promote all things horror in yet another venue. However, we are new to Blogger so please, bear with us!

 

We plan on promoting horror, cult, and exploitation films, as well as art, books, and television relating to horror. If you have a project involving the horror genre, and would like us to help promote, feel free to contact us!

We will also be providing reviews of movies in the horror and horror related genres. Most of these will feature a male and female perspective in these reviews, since there are two of us and at times our opinions may differ. So subscribe and spread the word!
