Why I Love Horror and Why It’s Important to Me

                                                               By Marcus Davis

Ever since I was a child I’ve had a fascination with the horror genre. I was introduced to my first horror film by a baby sitter when I was about 5 or 6 years old. Every time I was dropped off at her house she would pull out a selection horror movies on VHS. The first one she made me watch was Tremors. While watching the film I couldn’t help but think of what I would do if these large worms that terrorized a small town were real. I kept thinking about what I would do differently. This fascination led me to become obsessed with the Sci-Fi channel, turning it on and tuning in every chance I had. It was on the Sci-Fi channel that I discovered movies like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and John Carpenter’s The Thing. There was something about these films that stuck with me. That something was the feeling of fear.

As I grew older I started to recognize the importance of fear. Fear is a human emotion that triggers the release of adrenaline and endorphins in the body. This feeling is important to me because it reminds me that we are human and there are things that are out of our control.  I enjoyed the way I felt while watching horror films. I was addicted to that feeling. The way the score of John Carpenter’s Halloween added to the terror that is Michael Myers. The way corpses were reanimated and brought back to life in Fulci’s Zombi2. Even how the gritty lifestyle the Sawyer family embodied in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre made me want to shower immediately. All of these elements are important because they remind us that not all movies have to have a happy ending.

The great thing about horror films is they allow us to use our imagination more than any other genre. It’s our imagination that allows us to think outside the box and think beyond the laws of reality. It’s in our imagination that our city can be overrun by zombies or we can save the damsel in distress from the clutches of a demonic killer. It’s these ideas that separate horror from drama, comedy, and romance films where the simple love story can be altered and reused over and over again.
Aside from watching horror films another way I get my horror fix is by attending haunted houses. Haunted houses give you a unique opportunity to live out some of your favorite horror fantasies in real life. Whether it’s walking through scenes from the films or a completely original idea you’re always guaranteed a good scare with the use of the same elements of the films. Haunted houses have harnessed the senses of sight, sound, and sometimes smell to completely engulf you in an atmosphere of pure horror. Most haunts don’t open until the fall season so I always plan accordingly to be able to attend as many as possible.
Not too long after I met my significant other, we discovered the phenomenons that are horror conventions. I couldn’t believe these conventions were taking place and I had no idea about them. I couldn’t help but notice how close to home I felt at these events. After attending my first horror convention I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I wanted to promote any and all things related to the horror community with the hope that there are others out there like me that love horror but didn’t have a proper outlet to get the enjoyment I was looking for.
Now that I’m older I still watch horror films and in fact collect them. I collect autographs and memorabilia of the films that stuck with me ever since I was a child. While sometimes criticized by others around me about my interests, I still continue to pursue my dreams in the genre that has given me so much in return. If I could give one piece of advice to anyone reading this that feels like they are alone because of their interests in horror, speak up and do something to preserve what you love. Whether it’s holding an event or showing someone a horror film for the first time, get out there and do it and help keep horror alive.

Skull and Bones Entertainment to interview Danny Trejo

Skull and Bones Entertainment to interview Danny Trejo in July

Dan "Danny" Trejo is an American actor who has appeared in numerous Hollywood films, most notably in "tough guy" roles as a villain or an anti-hero.

Dan Trejo was born in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, rejo is the son of Alice Rivera and Dan Trejo, a construction worker. He is a second cousin of filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, though the two were unaware that they were related until the filming of Desperado.

While speaking at a recovery meeting in Los Angeles, Trejo met a young man in the movie business. His newfound friend invited him to the set of Runaway Train where Trejo was offered a job as an extra in the film's prison scenes. Edward Bunker, himself a former convict and well-respected crime author who was writing the screenplay for the film, recognized Trejo, with whom he had done time at San Quentin. It was widely misreported that Trejo was actually serving time in the prison where filming took place. Bunker remembered Trejo's boxing skills, and offered him $320 per day to train Eric Roberts, one of the movie's stars, for a boxing scene. Director Andrei Konchalovsky liked Trejo's work and decided to offer him a prominent role in the film.

Since then, Trejo has become a prolific actor in both films and television, acting alongside some of Hollywood's most famous actors, including Jean-Claude Van Damme, Johnny Depp, Al Pacino, Nicolas Cage, Charles Bronson, George Clooney, John Malkovich, Robert De Niro, Harrison Ford, Val Kilmer, and Antonio Banderas. Trejo has often appeared in five or more movies per year in various genres. Major releases in which he has acted include Machete, Blood in Blood Out, Animal Factory, Bubble Boy, Anaconda, Marked for Death, xXx, Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Heat, From Dusk till Dawn, Con Air, Six Days Seven Nights, Spy Kids, The Replacement Killers, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Predators, Urban Justice, The Devil's Rejects, Valley of Angels, Delta Farce, Grindhouse, Rob Zombie's Halloween and Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror.

Newberry Cornfield Maze 2011 Review

Newberry Cornfield Maze
Laugh by day....SCREAM by night..

Gainesville, FL- We arrived shortly after dusk on a Saturday night. The completely dark and near empty bumpy dirt road that led us to Hodges Farm got us in the mood to be scared that's for sure. We arrived and parked  in a huge lot beside the cornfield, parking was free which was a plus. We got into line and waited no more than 10-15 minutes to purchase tickets. If you purchase tickets online, you can skip the line when you arrive. The cost is $9 for adults and $7 for children 10 & under and an additional $5 for the hay ride. We opted not to do the hayride, though they do have a haunted house which is included with admission. Once inside we made our way to the cornfield as the sound of chainsaws roared in the background.

As we approached the corn maze, we were unable to tell where the entrance or exit was because people were both entering and exiting from the same place. We were told by security it didn't really matter where you did what. This was slightly disappointing since the point of a maze is to enter one way and find your way out through the other. Slightly disheartened, we entered the maze. Immediately we were greeted by a gentleman in a Michael Myers mask and a chainsaw, while we don't scare so easily, others didn't take so well to our greeter and ran past us screaming. This became a main point of frustration with the maze, other people screaming and running by, therefore taking away the element of surprise or fear when you approach the person they are fleeing from. The maze was a letdown in that aspect, as well as the fact that it was very hard to actually get "lost" in the maze. It seemed no matter what you would end up back at the entrance, or exit, whatever it was. We went through once rather quickly and later decided to try again. The second time we did get further into the maze, and even had a few points of isolation from everyone else. One time in particular as we walked, shining our flashlight at the corn around us, looking for one of those chainsaw wielding scare actors, the light landed right on one and he immediately burst from the corn chasing us quite a bit through the maze. That instant of running, slightly scared and hearing a chainsaw roaring behind you, is the feeling we were looking for this whole time. Unfortunately, those instances were few and far between. We never did accomplish the feeling of being lost in the darkness of a cornfield in the middle of nowhere, which was the goal we had in mind. That was a major let down in our opinion.
